How to Use QR Codes at Open Houses to Capture Relocation Leads

From the team behind the Life in Idaho Area Guide, the personalized relocation guide for Treasure Valley real estate agents.

Open houses bring in two kinds of visitors: neighbors who are curious, and people who are actually shopping. In the Treasure Valley, a good share of that second group are from out of state, in town for a weekend to get a feel for the area before they move. They are exactly the clients you want to meet, and they are often the hardest to follow up with, because they leave without signing in.

A QR code that links to your relocation guide fixes that. It gives visitors something worth scanning, a free guide to the area they are thinking about moving to, and it gives you their name and email without a clipboard. The lead lands in your inbox and CRM on its own, so there is no typing sign-in sheets into your system after a long weekend. Here is how to set it up.

Why QR Codes Work at Open Houses

Everyone walking through has a phone in hand, and phone cameras read QR codes without a separate app. A scan takes two seconds and feels lower-pressure than a sign-in sheet. When the code leads to a free guide to the area, visitors who are considering a move have a real reason to scan it.

What you get out of it

  • More real contact info. People who would skip the sign-in sheet will scan for something useful, and the landing page collects their name and email before the guide opens.

  • No data entry. Leads are sent to your email and CRM automatically, so you are not retyping names on Sunday night.

  • A reason to follow up. You already know they are interested in moving here, which makes the first message easy to write.

  • It keeps working after the open house. The guide stays on their phone, with your name on every page, while they keep researching.

How to Set It Up in Six Steps

Step 1: Get Your Landing Page Link

The code should point to a page that captures the lead, not straight to a PDF. With the Signature and Ultimate packages, the Life in Idaho Area Guide comes with a branded lead-capture landing page. Visitors enter their name and email, the guide opens, and the lead is emailed to you and sent to your CRM. Copy that link. It is the only address you need.

Step 2: Make the Code

Any QR code generator will do. Canva has one built in, and so does the Chrome browser (right-click a page and choose “Create QR code for this page”). It takes about five minutes.

Two things to check

  • Use a static code. Some services offer “dynamic” codes that can be edited later, but many stop working if you cancel the subscription. A static code is permanent.

  • Test it before you print. Scan it with your own phone and make sure it opens your landing page, not a preview or a login screen.

Step 3: Put It Where People Stop

Visitors scan when they are standing still. The sign-in table, the kitchen island, and the spot where you greet people are the best places. A small tent card or a framed sign works. Make the code itself at least an inch or two across so it scans from a comfortable distance.

The wording matters more than the design. Keep it short and about them:

“Moving to Idaho? Scan for a free guide to Boise and the Treasure Valley.”

Step 4: Pair It With a Printed Guide

A printed copy of the guide on the table is what makes people stop. Leave it open to the city overviews or seasonal events. The QR sign next to it offers the digital version to take home. Visitors who pick up the book will scan the code, and visitors who scan the code will often ask if they can take the book. Either way, you have the lead. Discounted printed copies are available anytime through the print portal.

Printed guides give visitors a reason to stop at the table.

Step 5: Mention It When You Greet People

The code works on its own, but one sentence from you gets far more scans. When you ask where someone is coming from and hear “Portland” or “Phoenix,” point at the table: “I put together a guide to the whole Valley. Scan that and it’s yours, and it’s a lot more useful than the listing sheet.” That is the entire pitch.

Step 6: Follow Up That Evening

Leads arrive in your email and CRM as soon as visitors request the guide. When the open house ends, send each one a short personal message: which house they saw, a thanks for stopping by, and one question about what they are looking for. Tag them in your CRM as an open-house lead with the property address, so later follow-up can reference it. For a longer plan, read how agents use a relocation guide to get more leads and conversions.

Use the Same Code Everywhere

Once you have the code, it keeps working for you. Put it anywhere a prospect might see it:

  • A rider on your yard signs, so drive-bys can grab the guide without calling

  • Listing flyers and brochures

  • The back of your business card

  • Booth signage at community events and homebuyer workshops

  • Your email signature and social media profiles, as a link

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Linking straight to a file. A PDF opens slowly on a phone and captures nothing. Link to the landing page.

  • Printing it too small or with low contrast. Use a dark code on a light background, large enough to read from where people stand.

  • Adding a second call to action. One code, one offer. A sign with a QR code, a phone number, a website, and a social handle gets ignored.

  • Not testing after printing. Scan the actual printed sign, not just the file.

Common Questions

Do visitors need an app to scan it?

No. The camera app on current iPhones and Android phones reads QR codes directly.

Will my code still work next year?

Yes. Your landing page link stays the same when the new edition comes out, so a static code you print this year keeps working.

Can I use a QR code with the Essential package?

You can link a code to your digital flipbook, but Essential does not include a landing page, so you will not receive the visitor’s contact information. The Signature and Ultimate packages include the landing page. See the Pricing page.

Set It Up Once, Use It All Year

A QR code and a printed guide turn every open house into a relocation lead source with almost no extra effort. The setup takes an afternoon, and the same code works at every showing, event, and yard sign after that.
